terri garey’s book signing july 12
July 6, 2008 at 12:27 pm | In Local Authors, Fiction--Horror, Events, Fiction--Mystery, Books, Tampa Bay Area, Fiction--Humor | No CommentsLocal author Terri Garey (Dead Girls Are Easy) will sign copies of her new book A Match Made In Hell on Saturday, July 12, from 1-3 p.m. at the Westshore Plaza Waldenbooks.
A spooky old house and a closet full of family skeletons leaves unwilling “ghoulfriend to the dead” Nicki Styx wondering if her life will ever get back to anything approaching normal. Things go from bad to worse when the Devil himself shows up, on the lookout for a hot new girlfriend with the power to help him harvest lost souls. Demons may be a ghoul’s best friend, but with this particular hottie, it could be a match made in hell! A Match Made In Hell is the sequel to last year’s hauntingly funny Dead Girls Are Easy (currently nominated for Best First Book and Best Paranormal Romance by Romance Writers of America).

book buzz:fangland by john marks
August 12, 2007 at 1:39 pm | In Reviews, Fiction--Horror, Books | No CommentsA travel diary written by TV news magazine The Hour producer Evangeline Harker chronicles her arduous trip to Transylvania to interview notorious crime lord Ion Torgu and describes her ensuing imprisonment, seduction and mysterious illness.
A series of email exchanges between someone at The Hour claiming to be Harker — although she’s been missing for months — and an easily influenced employee reveal the increasingly bizarre actions of infected Hour staff.
A network executive’s last will and testament describes the unexpected arrival of videotapes and large crates from Romania. The videotapes appear blank, but with the continual malfunction of The Hour’s recording equipment, no one can be sure. The ominous crates remain unopened in a back hallway of the office, but become objects of obsession among the TV news show staff.
An employee’s personal therapy journal documents the effects of the mysterious illness sweeping through the office: the insomnia, disturbing dreams, and words like “Nanking,” “Gomorrah,” and “Treblinka” constantly haunting one’s mind.
By presenting the story through personal email, journals and diaries, Marks creates a voyeuristic thrill for the reader peering into these multiple first-hand accounts. Marks re-imagines the vampire myth and combines it with sharp commentary on post-911 media and office politics to create an unusual story. To me, the ending didn’t quite live up to the promise of the rest of the book, but Fangland is still a worthwhile read.

Full Wolf Moon by K.L. Nappier (ISBN #1-55404-192-9)
Through the setting of a 1942 U.S. internment camp for Japanese-Americans, Full Wolf Moon explores a controversial and often-overlooked period in American history. While the tension level at the Tulenar Internment Camp is always high — for both the displaced Japanese-American citizens and the overworked staff assigned to the camp — a series of vicious animal attacks leaves the entire camp nervous and afraid.
In the traditional K.L. Nappier style, however, there’s a twist. The animal stalking the camp during each full moon is a powerful and very hungry werewolf. Plus, the captain recently placed in charge of the internment camp’s processing center just happens to be recovering from a horrific animal attack he experienced a few months ago…
Nappier has successfully revived the werewolf myth by incorporating elements old (the markings on the victims’ palms mentioned in European lycanthrophy lore) and new (the Navajo healer/werewolf hunter who wants to kill the beast but save the man). Full Wolf Moon was compelling and suspenseful; I’m looking forward to the sequel.

- Washington, D.C. crime-fiction writer and poet Ed Lynskey wrote to let me know that his new mystery Blue Cheer was released April 30. “P.I. Frank Johnson has moved to Scarab, West Virginia, drawn by the promise of lazy days and the lure of its tranquil mountains. What he finds instead is a Stinger rocket exploding over his back yard. His ensuing investigation uncovers a cult called the Blue Cheer, a racist group with ugly terrorist plans. As events heat up, blood starts to spill, and for Frank it all gets real personal real quick. With the help of his bounty hunter pal, he sets out to bring the Blue Cheer to justice — any way he can!” Visit his website to learn more.
- Chicago author Deon C. Sanders wrote to let me know about the e-book release of his second supernatural horror novel I Am. His novel is about Lucifer’s war with God and His army of angels and the real — secret – reason why Lucifer was so jealous. “It was an unknown evil, just as powerful as God. Its name was “No Name,” it was neither good nor evil, and it was neither merciful nor malicious.” Click here to learn more about Sanders’ new e-book.
